OsteoChondritis Dissecans

So it all happened so quickly...Matt has had knee problems for most of his adult life, but he is such a manly man that he usually deals with it and doesn't complain. Lately however he has had a rather large chunk of Cartilage (approx 1" X 1/2" long) floating around in his knee, when it wedges itself someplace unpleasant his knee locks up and he can not even walk. His condition is called osteochondritis dissecans. He decided to go see a Dr about the problem. He is going to the same Dr that the ATL Falcons and the ATL Thrashers use (that is code for very good dr, and very expensive dr.) So he went to the dr. last Thursday, had two MRI's Saturday, back to the Dr. on Monday, then into surgery on Wednesday. He had arthroscopic surgery to remove the piece of cartilage, and to look around and see where the piece broke off from. They also removed a small sliver of healthy cartilage to send to a lab in Boston to grow (clone) some of his cartliage cells to replace the part that broke off. The Dr. described it as filling in a hole and then putting a man hole cover over it.
He is home recovering really really well. He is a great patient, never complains and is getting around well already. He is planning to head back to work Monday, and of course he plans on heading to see GI Joe Friday!

Kenyon had the same Dr! His knee used to lock up like that too and the pics were incredible that came back from his surgery. Matt should do fine now...what a relief. Kenyon hasn't had any problems (knock on wood) since he had his surgery. :0)

Ugh, knee surgery, we've been down that road. At least they could do the arthroscopic surgery and not something more invasive. I hope he doesn't have any more problems.

He has to go back in 2-4 months to have another surgery done, this one will be intense, several months of recovery time a large scar down his knee. We are not looking forward to that one!
